Wicklow 0-15

Fingal 1-7

Although being down to 14 men for most of the second half, Wicklow got their campaign off to a winning start in Swords.

Daly Dose of Reality - Fallon

By Conor McKeon,

E Herald

Wednesday March 03 2010

RONAN Fallon yesterday revealed the secret behind Anthony Daly's management masterstroke which turned a dire defeat by Waterford into a nine-point humbling of Tipperary in just seven days.

"A few lads got a 'kick up the arse' more so than anything," said the St Vincent's centre-back.

Primitive? Maybe. But effective nonetheless.

"Lads were going out thinking we were better than we were, going out against Waterford and they just wanted it more than us and it showed on the scoreboard. I don't think the Dublin players believed what was after happening. So last week in training lads just knuckled down and things came right on Sunday."

Fallon did not play against Tipp after a stomach bug ruled him out, though he was back training last night and will be in contention for a recall against Offaly in Tullamore on Sunday week. Admitting that qualifying for a league final was Dublin's primary spring objective, Fallon circled the remaining home matches against Cork and Kilkenny as the big ones in their pre- championship programme.

"You'd need to be winning at least four of the last five anyway," he reckoned when asked what it would take to make the Division 1 decider. "Everyone has lost apart from Galway and Kilkenny at this stage.

"We're looking more at the home matches and to hopefully take maximum points from the home matches because we've been good enough in Parnell in the last few years and if we can pick up a couple of away victories ... " he added.

Central to that ambition will be Dublin's new kids on the block from '09: Liam Rushe, David Treacy and Óisín Gough. The trio made an immediate impact on a team in which Fallon was settled and recognised as one of the few blue chip performers, but the size of their contributions seemed to genuinely shock the Vincent's man.

"Yeah, I couldn't believe it," he admitted. "They're coming in as big as any of the senior lads on the panel and I couldn't believe how quick they came on to it. They're flying now and they're there with the best on the panel. The three of them had great games on Sunday. Liam Rushe caught some amount of ball and 'Gougher' kept Eoin Kelly quiet. The three of them are flying it and they're their positions to lose," he concluded.

Kevin's Easter Festival of Hurling

Preparations are well under way for the fourth annual Easter Hurling Festival in Dublin’s south inner city. The Senior All-Ireland (Brian Scott Cup) tournament is the main event in and will be held on Saturday 3rd April 2010. Players, mentors and supporters will be well catered for on the day. A family fun day is also being held which keeps the younger supporters involved in the days activities. The 11 aside format was first used in 2002 as part of our club’s centenary celebrations and reinvigorated in 2007 with the inaugural Brian Scott Cup, which was won by Emeralds (Kilkenny). Glynn-Barntown (Wexford) took the title in 2008 and Lucan Sarsfield’s (Dublin) were the first Dublin club to win the competition in 2009.

The Easter Festival itself is a two day event. There are a number of underage competitions running on Good Friday from under 9 up to minor. Last year’s competitions were attended by GAA President Nicky Brennan who provided plenty of encouragement to the future players and members of the association. Last year’s minor event was very competitive which was won by Saint Rynagh’s (Offaly), beating beat Erins Isle (Dublin) in the final. Entry to all competitions is based on a first come, first served basis which is confirmed on receipt of the entry fee.

For more details about our club and the event you can log onto our new website on www.kevins.ie. For underage tournaments contact Paul McManus (087 6610744). Senior clubs can contact Paul Crampton (086 2792492) and general enquiries can be made to David Hyland (087 3687349) or via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Fingal Hurlers win in Sligo

Fingal 1-15
Sligo 0-10
Fingal travelled to Markievicz Park, Sligo on Sunday afternoon and a good second half performance resulted in an eight point victory to give Dublin hurling a second win in the NHL for the day.
However, their performance in the first half gave no indication of such a clearcut result. Failing to develop any momentum they could never impose themselves on the home team. Their discipline also left them down in conceding thirteen frees in the first thirty five minutes. Sligo opened the scoring with a pointed free in the third minute but two Martin Ormonde points pushed Fingal a point clear after ten minutes. The game then descended into a very stop- start affair with both sides being guilty of errors and sloppy play. In the last ten minute period of the half Fingal pushed on with three points (Ormonde 2 frees and Paul MacAllister from play) but their concession of frees gave Sligo a brace of points from their Kilkenny native free taker, Colin Herity. A slender one point lead, five to four, was probably a fair reflection of the disappointing fare provided by both teams in that period.
A refocused Fingal squad took the field for the second thirty five. Although conceding another free to Herity to level the game, the switch of McAllister to midfield was generating more play for the Fingal front six. They hit a rich vein of form with five unanswered points to lead by double scores at the three quarter mark. The consistent number 11 Ormonde added two of these points which were complimented by good scores from Colm Foley, Emmet McCabe and McAllister. Sligo then got their first score from play with a good point from corner forward Mark Gordon and another Herity brace reduced the deficit to three.
The major incident of the game arrived on the 26th minute of the half when Fingal substitute, Eanna Slattery, played a great 40m cross field pass to fellow substitute Brian McCarthy who offloaded to Dara de Burca and with a first time strike he found the Sligo net. Despite a reply from Herity with another pointed free the momentum was with Fingal and they finished out the game impressively with points from Ormonde (3) and McAllister.
Fingal are out again in six days time in the refixed game against Wicklow in Swords on Saturday at 2.30pm. If they are to overcome a Wicklow side trying to bounce straight back up to Division 3A the Fingal lads will have to produce an effort like their second half effort today for the full seventy next weekend.
Best for the Fingallians today were the youthful duo of Niall Ring and Michael Cussen in defence, the hard working Ross McGarry at midfield, and Colm Foley and Paul McAllister in attack in the second half. However the most impressive performer was Ormonde who supplemented his excellent free-taking with four great points from play.

Col Eanna Wins Leinster Hurling Final

Col Eanna 3-12

Cistercian Col, Roscrea  2-8

Second-half goals from John Breen and Finnian McDonagh propelled Dublin side Colaiste Eanna to glory in the Leinster schools' senior "B" hurling final on Saturday last in O'Moore Park Portlaoise.

The Dubs were trailing by two points at half-time, but they turned the tide in the second half by outscoring their opponents 2-6 to 1-4.

The Roscrea college were by far the better side in the opening half as some fine scores from Jack O'Driscoll and David Kinghelped them to a 1-6 to 1-4 interval lead.

But the second half failed to live up to expectations, with the goals from Breen and McDonagh proving vital, with Finbar Furey and Cillian Moffat tagging on late insurance scores.

SCORERS -- Col Eanna CBS: F McDonagh 1-1, C Moffat 0-3 (0-3f) S O'Shea, J Breen 1-0 each, G Corrigan 0-3, F Furey 0-2f , N Ryan 0-2f, N Maguire 0-1. Cistercian Roscrea: D King 1-3 (0-3f), B Duggan 1-1, J O'Driscoll 0-2, K Moran, R Skelly 0-1 each.

Daly hails attitude as Dublin set a new standard

Dublin 1-21
Tipperary 1-12

The hurling league can be a curious entity. Last weekend Waterford trounced Dublin to the point of embarrassment. Seven days on, Dublin do an equally humiliating number on Tipperary.

Next up? Tipperary to beat Kilkenny in Semple Stadium perhaps, and then Kilkenny to lay waste to just about everyone after that? Predictable in its own curious way.

As sure as night follows day, Anthony Daly was going to wring a response from his players after the Waterford result. And as sure as day follows night, Tipperary were going to be derailed somewhat after two aborted attempts to play their match with Kilkenny.

That was one they had devoted all their early-season energies to. When it didn't happen, Parnell Park was never going to have the same hold on them.

Still, their laissez-faire attitude to the day should not dilute the fact that this was by far Dublin's most complete performance since Daly's arrival. They've set a pretty high standard for themselves now.

Dominant

In every facet of the game, in every area of the field, they were dominant. Daly had asked midweek for a renewal of commitment and courage and he got it in spades. The quality of their blocking stood out.

Niall Corcoran and Oisin Gough were imperious in the corners of defence, Stephen Hiney was lord and master of all he surveyed at centre-back, where Ronan Fallon was a late defection with a stomach bug. John McCaffrey was always the busiest midfielder, while all Dublin's half-forwards made contributions in different ways -- Liam Rushe's sublime fielding, Peter Kelly's pace, Shane Durkin's assists.

Alan McCrabbe's detail to roam from corner-forward paid handsome dividends but it's the accuracy of his dead-ball striking that is perhaps the most important piece of artillery in Dublin's arsenal. In Walsh Park last week, his season looked to be over with a suspected broken leg. He contributed 10 points here. Some difference.

There was character too from Dublin, to block out the vision of Lar Corbett's searing run in the first few seconds, drawing a clumsy foul by Tomas Brady to merit a penalty that Eoin Kellyconverted.

Daly's thoughts as Kelly's shot shook the net behind Gary Maguire?

"It's going to be hard enough to beat them by a point without giving them a goal start. But our fellas really showed great attitude. They didn't say 'ah here we go again'."

In that respect there were two periods critical to Dublin's victory. From that goal down they dominated the next 10 minutes and scored six unanswered points, half-back Maurice O'Brien's effort from near the sideline being the most memorable after he had initially been blocked.

Tipperary eventually got some traction but it wasn't sustained. Padraic Maher was able to hoover up a lot of ball in his free role and Kelly looked sharp. Eventually they stumbled into a lead that they really didn't deserve, 1-6 to 0-8, on 27 minutes, courtesy of Noel McGrath's point that Maguire just failed to reach.

That was the cue for Dublin to surge again. A wonderful Rushe catch teed up a McCaffrey delivery which David O'Callaghan got a touch to in the Tipperary square for a 28th-minute goal.

They kicked on from there and pressurised Tipperary hard. Peter Kelly was denied a second Dublin goal by the post before Durkin's second point, made by a Kelly block and a pinpoint cross-field pass by McCrabbe, one of the moves of the game.

Dublin took a 1-12 to 1-7 lead in at the break and built steadily after that, always keeping Tipp at arm's length. By the end of the third quarter they were secure.

"You wouldn't have expected a scoreline like this," conceded Daly. "We'll take it but we won't be getting carried out with it either. We said on Tuesday night we know we're not that bad, so we had to face the reality that, at this level, if you stand off against any of these teams you will be destroyed and that's what we did last week. We were destroyed.

"Today we decided to face out to the oul ball: 'if you miss it, you miss it but go out to the bloody thing anyway and have the moral courage to go for it'. That was what Tuesday was about."

The victory restores any credibility issue that may have lingered about Dublin's journey over the last 12 months.

"People were saying we had a half-decent season last year and the way we let ourselves be beaten last season was just so disappointing," Daly acknowledged.

For Tipperary, the half-forward line is once again in problematic phase. They were cleaned out across the board, with Seamus HennessySeamus Callanan and Hugh Maloney all bidding adieu to the action before the end.

It took them over 50 minutes to emerge from their dressing-room and when they did Sheedy didn't seek to make excuses for the on/off nature of their league campaign over the previous eight days, bemoaning only a dearth of game time.

"They out-worked us, out-muscled us, won every battle and won every line. They were deserving winners," he said. "We could have done with more game time. No matter how much you do at home it doesn't add up to enough when you come out to competitive action. But there's no excuses -- we got the perfect start but throughout the field Dublin wanted it more."

Scorers -- Dublin: A McCrabbe 0-10 (0-8f, 0-1 sl), D O'Callaghan 1-1, P Kelly, S Durkin 0-2 each, K Flynn, D Treacy, L Rushe, J McCaffrey, M O'Brien, S Lambert 0-1 each. Tipperary: E Kelly 1-5 (1-0 pen, 0-3f, 0-1 '65), S Callanan 0-2, D Fanning, S Hennessy, N McGrath, L Corbett, B Dunne 0-1 each.
